Singapore

Singapore is another large, wealthy Asian city. The central business district is a polished mass of marble, concrete, chrome and glass which sparkles in the tropical sun. A coterie of skyscrapers create a fairly impressive skyline – a bit like Hong Kong’s smaller, more reserved brother – and the whole place oozes wealth. We had a drink in one of the quayside cafes and nearly blew our daily budget! It felt, sitting next to the river amidst the huge buildings, like we were on the South Bank in London…except the beers were more expensive.

We stayed in an area called Little India, a grid of relatively narrow roads with ornate Hindu temples, screeching Banghra music, a slap-up curry for under a fiver and, of course, lots of Indians. If it wasn’t for the expensive accomodation (we paid 20 pounds for a bunk-bed in a 5-bed dorm) you could believe you were in downtown Delhi or Calcutta.

We were only in Singapore for one night, and that was all we needed – all we could afford! – before flying to the Indonesian island of Bali.
